This gospel was authored by Mark, a close associate of the apostle Peter who likely taught Mark much of the material from his first-hand accounts of the life of Jesus. Mark was also an associate of Paul but fell out of favour in the early years of Paul's ministry. He later went on to become a trusted aid. Mark wrote this account some time prior to a.d. 70.
